I'm Andrea and I'm new to tribe. I'm not a massage therapist yet, I'll start my training in January. It's a big change from what I do now but I've been thinking about it for years and have decided that now's the time. I'm planning on volunteering my free time after I graduate at a Hospice. My dad spent the last couple weeks of his life at a Hospice here in Kansas and I was so very impressed with how they treated him.
I have a question for you experts. I can get my certificate or I can finish up an associate's degree. Is there a difference in job opportunities that will be available to me? I mean, do most places care whether I've taken college english and math and other non-MT-related classes?
Thanks in advance for your help!

Re: Just to introduce myself...
Fri, July 27, 2007 - 8:26 AMHey Andrea, I'm Heather. I'm from Wichita and I moved to Colorado Springs to go to the Colorado Institute of Massage Therapy about a year ago. I don't feel like it really matters if you get a degree or a certificate. Personally I would choose the degree...just to have it you know, it always looks better. Sounds like you are planning on going to Butler for this, I looked into it also. I've heard it is a pretty good program, just wasn't what I personally was looking for. If you don't go for the degree you should check into some of the other schools around also. There is Body and Soul on Hillside close to Central, give them a call and see what they have to offer. You may get better anatomy training at Butler, which, in my opinion is one of the most important things. I think you have made a wonderful decision and you will not regret it. You are going into this for all the right reasons, you care. Working at a Hospice is going to be so rewarding for you. I'm about to begin an internship at Hospice here in Colorado Springs. It's an experience I know will be challenging, but the rewards will far outweigh the challenge. Hope I've been helpful, let me know if there is anything else, any other questions. I examined all of my options in Wichita before I decided to come out here so if you don't feel like doing the research yourself I probably already have. Good luck and congrats on the best decision you have ever made. -

Re: Just to introduce myself...
Sun, July 29, 2007 - 2:30 PMThanks so much, Heather! Yes, I am planning on going to Butler for this, I looked into Body and Soul and the others in the area but their class schedule didn't agree with my work schedule. I've been leaning toward getting the certificate, then finishing up my degree once I get up and running. I would love to move to CO to go to school, I hear Boulder has one of the best programs in the world, but for personal reasons I must stay in KS for the next two years or so.
Thank you for words of encouragement! I have several friends who are massage therapists and they all have told me how happy and fulfilled they are. I am excited to take this step; as I said, I've been thinking about it for years but lately have found the motivation (in the form of severe job discontent) I've been lacking. Good luck with your internship.
